Ardea alba
Egret No. 8 is a great egret that was feasting off a shrimp boat on Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant. SC. The great egret a tall elegant wading bird with pure white plumage, a long S-shaped neck, and slender black legs. Standing up to 3.5 feet tall with a wingspan of about five feet, it hunts quietly in shallow waters. It strikes fish, frogs, and insects with its sharp yellow bill. During breeding season, long delicate plumes emerge from its back, which were once highly prized in the plume trade. They nest in colonies, often alongside herons and ibises. They are celebrated for their graceful movements and striking silhouette against marshes, lakes, and rivers.
